What sort of 'energy' are they discussing? I was a physics major, so I get really freaked out when people speak about 'energy' generally and don't specify what it is. It may also add to your setting to discuss what the 'energy' is and it affects Hiro. Perhaps give it a specific name.
One thing I'm finding to be strange is the sense of setting for the manga. It only seems to take a small amount of time to travel to completely different environments. And the beginning made it sound like Hiro was deployed really far away from base, but here he is in a meeting with his superiors suddenly. It's hard to tell where every place is and how far apart they are. I think one thing that contributes to this is that time seems to elapse very suddenly in between scenes without a lot of transition.
